Columbia digging

Today the two of us went to Columbia for some record digging. We didn't really find much but I'll just chalk it up to our large collection making it harder to find rare and cool stuff. We are not giving up! Here's a few things we did find:

The White Stripes - Icky Thump picture disc
Side A has a really cool pic of Jack and Meg in their famous button outfits.
The White Stripes - Icky Thump picture disc
Side B

The White Stripes - The Big Three Killed My Baby
I picked this TMR re-release up for nothing. One day I'll own an original, until then this can be a place holder.

 Cream - Wheels of Fire
I bought this record a long time ago only to find that it had two side A's. I was very happy to come across this for $1. It's such a great live album and the closest I'll get to listening to Clapton.

 Donovan - Slow Down World
Another really cool Donovan album to add to the pile. Can't beat a promo record for a dollar in great shape.

The Nearness of You - Dan and Dale

John Mayall - USA Union
Mr. Empty has been playing this record like crazy. It's really good and we will definitely be on the lookout for more John Mayall records.

Josh White - The Beginning Volume 2
I was very excited to find this at Manifest Records. The prices for Josh White records are usually pretty crazy so I was glad that I could get this for only 3 bucks!

Recent Vinyl

Here's an update on some new vinyl that we have recently purchased.

I will start with a few online purchases:
The White Stripes - You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do As Your Told) 7 inch
I bought this off ebay from the Netherlands and got a great deal. It is a 2007 pressing that still has the sticker intact, I haven't brought myself to break the seal yet but I'm sure one day (very soon) I will.

Beck - Third Man Records Blue Series
The side A song - I Just Started Hating Some People Today - is really really interesting. It's the weird Beck that we all are used to.

Jack White - Freedom at 21
A new single from Jack White's album Blunderbuss. Side B has a non album track. I was too interested to hear it to not buy this 7 inch!

The Dead Weather - Live 12 inch single
Mr. Empty got this at Papa Jazz early one morning. It's pretty rare for Papa Jazz to have these in stock because they get purchased very quickly. It's a cool record and I'm glad that we own it.

Donovan - Wear Your Love Like Heaven
Found this at 2nd and Charles for 5 bucks! A great steal for this original stereo pressing.

Frank Sinatra - My Way
I brought this a Goodwill yesterday for 50 cents! The cover is a little beat up but the vinyl itself is in wonderful condition! My grandfather was a huge Sinatra fan so it rubbed off on me. There was almost an entire catalog of Sinatras records but this on was the only one is decent shape.

Bring Me To The Horizon - Suicide Season
The cover is pretty disturbing but Mr. Empty was super excited to find this record at Manifest Disc and Tapes.

Cage The Elephant - Thank You Happy Birthday
This record came in the mail the other day and we were both very excited! We got to see them play live last year and they did a bunch of songs from this album. I don't know why we didn't get it sooner

The Strawberry Alarm Clock - Incense and Peppermints
I got this first pressing stereo copy for $8 dollars at Papa Jazz on our last visit. Upon inspection of the record, I found that it is beat to shit. But, the owner assured me that it played above the grade. I took a chance and it plays with pops, skips, or noise. Which is insane considering that it looks like someone rolled over it repeatedly with a desk chair.

Big Brother -Confusion
This album is one big bag of confusion! I'm not entirely sure what it is or who it is by but it's pretty darn good! It cover looked so interesting I had to take a chance. I looked it up on the internet to see if I could find any info. It turns out that this is an early sixties L.A. band by Ernie Joseph. I'll definitely be looking for more albums of theirs in the future.
Frank Turner - I Still Believe (UK Record Store Day Exclusive)
My friend David Goodship knows my love for Frank Turner and he was kind enough to get this and send it over the pond to me. I was super excited to finally get it after looking across 3 states for it and on ebay and having no luck getting a deal on it. Side B features a Queen cover Somebody To Love which is amazing. Mr. Empty and I had the pleasure of hearing it live last October in Atlanta. Thanks again David!

Bluffton County Record Picks

These records were purchased from several different locations between Beaufort and Charleston S.C.
Herb Albert - Whipped Cream & Other Delights
Yet another Whipped Cream for Mr. Empty's collection.

 The Best of Doc Severinsen
Mr. Empty found this in a hopping thrift store. I'm pretty sure that he was immediately drawn into the album artwork and would have paid over the 50 cent sticker price.

 A Group Called Smith
This is an early 60's group on Dunhill records. I've never heard of them but I used context clues to guess that they were similar to The Mamas and Papas. I haven't listened to it yet but will hopefully soon.

The Lovin' Spoonful - The Best Of The Lovin' Spoonful - Vol 2
The record is n great shape and I couldn't say no. They are such a sweet sounding band. Perfect soundtrack for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

The Mamas & The Papas LP
Great record and a great addition to our collection

The Rascals - Greatest Hits
Love this cover, it's a great representation of the sixties pop art movement

Rotary Connection LP
I got this one for the cover. I thought the selective color on the ballons was genius.

Roky Erickson - All That May Do My Rhyme
Very cool album by Rocky for the 13th Floor Elevators. Mr. Empty was very excited to make this his very first Roky Erickson LP purchase. We got this at a cute new record store called Earshot. They had a great selection and I hope that they can make it!

Gary Clark Jr.
This is a record store day exclusive that we missed out on. Mr. Empty was very excited to find this at Earshot records as well. We actually has the privilege of seeing him live a few nights ago. What an amazing show! Go buy this album!

The Hundred - In The Hands 7 in
A new 7 in to add to our growing collection

JP. Chrissie & Th Fairground Boys - If You Let Me
Mr. Empty has been wanting to get this for a while. We were lucky to find it at a discounted price of only $2.

Bloc Party - The Prayer
A random 7 in that Mr. Empty took a chance on from Monster Music in Charleston. It's actually quite good

The Darkness 7in picture disc
I was so excited when Mr. Empty found this! I absolutely love the cheesiness of The Darkness. This is a UK exclusive and it features the songs: I Believe In A Thing Called Love and rare B-side Makin' Out. I'm not quite sure how it ended up here in America but I sure and glad :)

The White Stripes
Yet another 7 in to add to my White Stripes collection!

Crate Digging On a Tuesday

Crate Digging On a Tuesday

We visited some of our favorite stores and scored some awesome stuff!
Big Brother & The Holding Co. - Live
I was very excited when Mr. Empty pulled this out of the new arrival bin at Papa Jazz. I got this for a great price and it's a pretty rare record! This record is a collection of early songs from 1966 released in the 80's. I was very happy to learn that Blow My Mind is on the album which is one of my favorite Big Brother songs.

Norman Greenbaum - Spirit In The Sky
Spirit In The Sky is my grandma's favorite song of all time. I had to get this because it reminds me of her and also that it is an awesome song.

 The White Stripes - Elephant
I finally own this! I won this in an action on Ebay. An early 2003 pressing from Third Man Records. I paid a little bit for it but it's in great condition so I couldn't not buy it.
 Red and White pressing!

The White Stripes - Conquest 7"
B-side It's My Fault For Being Famous produced by Beck. It came with a cool poster of Meg and Jack and also a rare Beck trading card.

Sunny Day Real Estate - The Pink Album
Mr. Empty got this at Scratch N' Spin and I was excited because it's so pink! He tells me that it is proto-emo. It was Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance before Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance.
Very pretty pink and white marble LP.

 The Black Keys - Brothers
After much deliberation, Mr. Empty finally bought this album. He loves The Black Keys and I think he was waiting for a picture disc to be released and got tired of waiting. It's a really good album and it came with a huge poster that we may put up one day.

Mr. Empty found an Arlo Guthrie 45. The City of New Orleans with b-side Ukulele Lady

 Gary Newman - Cars 45

The b-side has a factory defect when it was pressed
so it was a good thing that Mr. Empty really only
bought this because he likes the song Cars.

From ebay to shitty bookstores

Here's a few pics of some records that we have recently purchased and acquired from all over, including ebay and shitty bookstores.

 Indigo Girls LP
Mr. Empty picked this one up from a bookstore in Georgia. We got it home listened to it and realized that he really doen't like the Indigo Girls.
 Blind Faith - Blind Faith
I got this for pretty cheap. It's a later pressing with a barcode. It will make a great listening copy so we won't have to break out our first pressing.

 The Black Keys - Thickfreakness
Mr. Empty could not resist this picture disc. One reason is because it's the black keys. The second reason is that it's a picture disc. My personal favorite song off this album us Set You Free.

 Jack White - Blunderbuss
How exciting! Jack White's first solo album. I had this baby on pre-order from the moment I heard about it. It has some really good strong songs on it and is worth getting. I hope one day we can see Jack live!

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts - Glorious Results of a Misspent Youth
I found this today at 2nd and Charles. A big shout out to Maria Baez for selling this record back. If all plays out as planned, Mr. Empty and I may be going to see Joan Jett in September.

The White Stripes - Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground
The got this 7" on ebay for nearly nothing. It's exciting that I actually own this. Side B has a wonderful version on Robert Johnson's Stop Breaking Down. It is mind blowing. Seriously, go find it. Now.

 The Sex Pistols - Spunk
Mr. Empty brought this from Criminal Records in ATL on out way home from Nashville. It's a Bootleg that is mastered realllllll low but the quality is good. A few different versions of this exist, but we have never seen this one. The jacket opening is also on the left instead of the right. Maybe one of a kind?

Fun. - The Ghost That You Are To Me
This was a record day exclusive that we were unable to get because by the time we left Third Man Records, they were sold out. We tried several different record stores, is several different states. They sold FAST! Mr. Empty got lucky a few days after RSD and found a cheap listing on ebay. It is really unique because the vinyl is a 10" in the shape of a gear. It features 4 acoustic songs from Fun. It has an version of the song We Are Young, that we actually like better than the original.
The Gear shaped vinyl

Bob Dylan-The Times They Are A-Changin'
I was super excited to pull out this mono version. And for 21 bucks! I could not say no. I even passed up a live 13 Floor Elevators that Mr. Empty waved in front of my face. I held on tight and I'm so glad that I did. It is in NM condish and sounds great. Something to brag about.
